WHEN THE CITY LIGHTS UP, WE “GO LIVE”: UNTOLD STORIES OF DEPLOY NIGHTS

20:00 on the Deployment Day
While most people are gathering around the dinner table or unwinding after a long day, the office lights are still blazing. This is when “G-hour” begins – the Production deployment. And just like that, our silent battle officially ignites. I call it a moment of intersection: where the weight of responsibility meets a team spirit burning bright.
1. “Spiritual Systems” and the Banana Bunch That Saves the Day
Before the first lines of code are typed, there is an unwritten ritual – one that no ISO process has ever documented: buying bananas.
It may sound strange to pure tech folks, but for our team, this is the most important “spiritual safeguard.” Hard-earned experience has taught us that on nights we forget the bananas, the server gods somehow make their presence known – unexpected issues pop up in the most unlikely places. A bright yellow bunch of bananas on the table feels like a promise of a smooth deployment. We believe in logic. We believe in code. But in the quiet of the late night, a little faith in luck gives the team an unshakable sense of calm.
2. Midnight Buffet: Snacks, Water, and Laughter
If 20:00 is peak concentration, then by 22:00 our “fuel reserves” start running low. This is when the work desk transforms into a mini buffet to recharge our energy.
- The “crunch, crunch” of snacks breaks the tense silence.
- Fresh fruit helps cool down overheated minds.
- And most importantly: water. No energy drinks, no heavy caffeine – just hydration and a strong sense of responsibility. That natural alertness becomes the strongest form of “doping” when drowsiness creeps in.
Strangely enough, this is also when laughter is at its loudest. Casual chats, playful jabs between Dev and QC help us forget the harshness of overtime. Maybe it’s those shared snacks and passed-around water bottles that bind us into one unified team.

3. The Thin Line Between “Done” and “Rollback”
On a smooth night, 23:00 is when we can finally exhale and start packing up to go home. But project life is rarely a bed of roses.
Some nights, when the clock has already struck 1:00 or 2:00 a.m., an issue appears. The air freezes. I stare at the screen, then at the faces around me – already starting to look worn and hollow.
“Rollback” – Those two words come out heavy. It’s the moment we choose to step back to protect the client’s system. There are deployments where issues are so complex that the whole team stays awake until dawn – exhausted, yet exhilarated when the root cause is finally found.

4. Responsible “Zombies”
The next morning, by policy, the team is allowed to rest and recover. The project desks are empty 0 but on internal chat channels, the “front line” is anything but quiet.
Key members of the team remain “Online.” Eyes darkened, bodies craving deep sleep, yet we’re ready to jump up and check Slack or handle issues immediately if the client responds. This is more than just work – it’s professional pride. Once deployed, it must be flawless. Once handed over, it must bring peace of mind.

The Lesson That Remains: The Value of Sleepless Nights
Looking back at those overnight deployments, I realize the greatest value isn’t the new features released, but the growth of the team itself.
- Preparation is the key: from technical readiness to… even the ritual bananas, every small detail contributes to big success.
- Responsibility defines quality: a good product is measured by how we face problems at 2 a.m., not at 2 p.m.
- Shared understanding: only those who stay up all night together truly understand the value of a system that runs smoothly the next morning.
Behind every stable system lies the heartbeat of passionate people, ready to burn bright when the city has already fallen asleep.
